It is a rare delight to discover a book about Australian wildlife where text and illustrations so perfectly compliment each other. These seven stories of men and birds which formed the basis of the successful ABC/TV series are different from any other writing on Australian natural history. The author is a distinguished scientist who has never lost his feeling of affection and admiration for the world about him and who can express his observations in a lucid, even lyric style, free of academic jargon and obscurity.
The book is illustrated not only by photographs of his own and of others who share his feelings but also by an artist whose vision and interpretation are both impressionistic and abstract and yet equally affectionate, admiring and witty.
There are two themes to this book: the first is the impact of man on some species of birds. It is not a theme of gloom, however, for three of the studies at least show the marvelous resilience which natural populations of animals can exhibit in the face of man's encroachment.
The second theme is the subtleness of the beauties of the natural world, or rather the pleasure that can be found in seeing past the obviously spectacular and instantly pretty. Observation at this depth leads to the knowledge and understanding which sharpens appreciation and enjoyment.
Both Douglas Dorward and John Olsen have thrown a new light on the Australian natural history scene. The book cannot be merely looked at or only read; it is, as has been said of Olsen's paintings, a 'total experience', a book to be cherished and enjoyed by all who love the natural beauty of Australia and its wildlife.
